Running as Therapy: Nita Sweeney’s Mental Health Journey

I’ll be honest: running isn’t my thing. I love exercise in general, but as many times as I’ve tried, I’ve never gotten that “runner’s high” you always hear about. After reading Nita’s book, though, I have to say I’m inspired to stay open-minded about it. Nita Sweeney has battled chronic depression and anxiety throughout her life, but through running she has been able to decrease her medication and manage her overall mental health. This very detailed journal tells the story of her decision to try running as therapy and how her mental health progressed along the way, but it also explains everything you need to know about running if you decide to take it up yourself–shoes to buy, what to wear, how to train, etc. She suggests books to read, movies to watch, podcasts, online runners’ groups, and the best apps and watches.

What was most inspiring to me was the fact that when she first decided to try running, she had to start with walking, and she didn’t even want her neighbors to see her. Now she’s a three-time marathoner and has no plans on stopping.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Nita recently and she said her new book, “Make Every Movement a Meditation,” comes out Sept. 13. I look forward to reading this as well!
